So what’s so good about sliced bread that we use the term? Well imagine a world where bread wasn’t sliced, that world existed pre 1928 before the automatic bread slicing machine was invented or serrated kitchen bread knifes were sold to the common person.
In those days, people would have to pulled off piece of bread and put some butter on it. Then some jam. There was no spreading it over a slice. There was no stacking layers of ham with layers of cheese. Basically each bite or so required you to take a knife or spoon to apply toppings. It was so labour intensive!
Imagine! Not having to pack the butter and jam in separate containers with your lunch.
Then sliced bread came along… No longer did it require 2 hands to grab some bread. No longer did your Dad with work hands or your little brother/sister with muddy hands leave their shit on the loaf. One slice could be removed without touching the rest. It was like an extra clean hand.
A mother could fix a quick snack with a baby on one arm! Like having a third arm!
It holds stew better. It folds around things for quick on the spot holders of food you’re about to stuff into your mouth.
It’s a Frisbee shape, previously unavailable for food fights.
Then there’s toasting bread…suddenly it’s a possibility within your grasp. Inventing the pop up toaster would not have happened without sliced bread.
So remember next time you’re making a sandwich, how lucky we are and appreciate the comment when talking about the latest gadget.
